He is a national first-class conductor, and successively held the posts of the Chairman, Art Director and Conductor of Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra, Director and Chief Conductor of the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director and Conductor of the Liangshan Symphony Orchestra.

Major Works: His works include symphonic ballade Memories on the Grassland, dance opera The Savage Land (awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China in 1988), and opera The Woman in Land of China (awarded in 1996). The orchestral work Overture was awarded Second Prize by the Chengdu Autumn International Music Season (1995). In the 19 films with music composed by Tang, the feature film The Well won the second prize at the Taormina Film Fest in Italy (1986), and the feature film The Accused Uncle Shang Gang won the 1995 Golden Rooster Award, Hundred Flowers Award, Government Award and Excellent Film Award for University Students (1994). In the nearly 50 TV dramas and audio dramas with music composed by Tang, the TV drama The Curved Stone Path won the first Flying Apsaras Awards (1983), and the audio drama The Puzzle of Autumn (1987) and Love the Land (1999) won the National Outstanding Audio Drama Award that year. His songs Getting Together on Double Ninth, Little Paper Boat and Moving Towards the Sun have won gold awards in the selection of Sichuan Radio Best New Songs.
